The work of the ICFDS is aimed primarily, but in no means exclusively, at boys and girls aged 5 to 16, their parents, coaches and teachers. However, it should be stressed that the game of Futebol de Salão can be played and enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities.

The ICFDS has at its core the development of the game of Futebol de Salão and uses Brazilian Soccer Schools and Brazilian Football Academies to introduce children to the game and the benefits that can be gained from playing it regularly.

ICFDS coaching focuses on increasing players' confidence with the ball and their technical ability to control, dribble and pass the ball. Most of our training uses the smaller, heavier Futebol de Salão balls, which help improve ball control and increase the number of touches players get in a game due to its minimal rebound and heavier weight.

The increased weight of the ball means that it is easier to control initially and does not rebound off a player’s foot or leg as easily as a conventional football.

This aids the learning process as players immediately gain confidence from having the ball at their feet.

The construction of the ball and the enclosed playing area in Futebol de Salão forces players to instinctively develop moves to beat players, creative passing and awareness of both teammates and the opposition.

A recent piece of research by Dr. Charles Buckley, Manchester Metropolitan University

Results from the three skills included in the Reilly and Holmes (1983) test and the juggling test were analysed with a Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance using ranks.

The results from the straight dribble test indicated that all groups improved. However, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the performance of the Brazilian and English groups. The group practicing Futebol de Salão showed a far greater improvement. The data suggests that coaching using Futebol de Salão has a more beneficial effect on dribbling ability than training with a conventional size 4 ball recommended by the English Football Association

Whilst there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between groups in the other three tests, an analysis of the data revealed that apart from the shooting test, the Futebol de Salão group improved more than the English group, particularly in the juggling test. There were noticeable improvements in post-test performances within all groups along with a decrease in performance in juggling from the English group.

Given the relatively small sample and period of intervention, Futebol de Salão, when compared to conventional approaches of soccer skill development, appears to offer exciting potential for improving performance in both dribbling and juggling.
